Photography Area: Photography has a long tradition at Ohio State, dating back to the 1890s, when it offered one of the first courses in the medium. The photography area is committed to a continuous exploration and redefinition of what it means to use photography as an art endeavor. The strength of our program comes from being part of a very large university community; we encourage cross-fertilization not only with other areas in the Department of Art, but also with areas outside the department.
Faculty and students complement studio practice with a historical and theoretical understanding of the medium and to that end, we offer history and theory classes within the photography area as well as outside the department including offerings from the History of Art Department and from Art Education, which offers several courses about the critical process of writing and talking about images.
Photography Area Facilities: A technical assistant supervises the photographic facilities which include digital darkroom (includes two Epson 9800 printers, four Epson 4800 printers, film recorder, and 20 IMac stations), black and white labs, alternative processes lab, large print lab, enlargers and view cameras through 8″x10″, holography lab (Art & Tech), and lighting studio.
