by and for: democracy and art
Juror: Carol A. Wells, Founder and Executive Director
Center for the Study of Political Graphics
Organized by: Southern California Women's Caucus for Art
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:
In the 1930s when the Works Progress Administration (WPA) was formed, our
government, by and for the people, understood the importance of art in
sustaining the American spirit and focusing the American public on shared
values. Since that time, art has acted as a forum for public opinion and as
a powerful tool for critique and communication in our democracy.
Artists at all career levels are asked to submit works that speak-to and
question the shifting meanings of freedom and equality, censorship and civil
liberties and specifically consider the role of art in a democracy. Or,
simply put, does democracy need art?
This exhibit is part of a yearlong democracy initiative at Avenue 50 Studio
that includes exhibitions, programs and public conversations and is
supported by a California Council for the Humanities grant.
