*PIANIST*

A Noise Within theatre company in Glendale seeks PIANIST for Spring
production of "Comedy of Errors." Pianist will accompany the production,
which will be set in the early 20th century, in the style of a traveling
vaudevillian/burlesque troupe. Rehearsals begin in February, performances
run through late May. Stipend: $500.

*JOB DESCRIPTION*
* PIANIST will serve as a sort of live sound designer/accompanist, much like
a pianist (or organist) would have during the showing of a silent film.
* PIANIST will assist Director in selecting music where there are actual
songs played, and also do some improvised playing.
* PIANIST may perform some minimal percussion from the piano (cowbells,
slapsticks, wood blocks, etc.).
*PIANIST will provide underscoring - either improvised or according to music
selected with Director - for the show during chase scenes and pantomime
between scenes.
* Styles of music would be selected from the early part of the 20th century,
and could include a combination of ragtime, honky-tonk, plus tin pan alley,
altzes, etc. Knowledge of these styles desirable, but for a skilled and
motivated pianist some training may be arranged.
* Ideally, PIANIST would be present during some of the middle and later part
of rehearsals (evenings and weekends during February,) as we figure out how
the music is being integrated.
* PIANIST is required for all tech/dress/preview/performances. Tech weekend
is February 19th and 20th.
* Performances run weekday evenings and weekends from February 26 through
May 14th, in rotating repertory with two other plays, according to main
season calendar posted at www.anoisewithin.org. Eight weekday student
matinees required - 4 during the month of March, 3 in April and one in May.
* Equal opportunity - age, ethnicity not a factor in casting - although some
ability for PIANIST to be styled to look like s/he fits in the early 20th
century would be preferable.
