THE 2011 WORLD FESTIVAL OF SACRED MUSIC- LOS ANGELES
Performers, Venues, Producers Sought for Citywide Event
Los Angeles, Judy Mitoma, Director of the acclaimed World Festival of Sacred Music-Los Angeles has officially launched the fifth World Festival of Sacred Music which will take place from Oct 1-16, 2011 in Los Angeles, California."Based on the success of the first event in 1999 and continuing enthusiasm amongst the community, we continue our commitment to a new Festival every three years." says Mitoma, producer of the 1999, 2002, 2005 and 2008 Festivals and Director of the UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance.
The 2011 Festival invites performing artists (music/dance) and venues including churches, synagogues, mosques, museums to submit their applications by January 10, 2011. Full details and guidelines are available at the official website, www.festivalofsacredmusic.org. The 2011 Festival will host 25 events over 16 days, and feature music, dance, - classical, traditional and contemporary - including special Opening and Closing ceremonies. This intercultural, interfaith, interethnic collaborative effort is founded on the belief that sacred music has the ability to bring forth shared human values on which humanity's future depends: peace, understanding and respect for all living things.
His Holiness The Dalai Lama described the 1999 World Festival of Sacred Music as an opportunity "to recognize the interconnected nature of our lives which in turn emphasizes the need for each one of us to develop the spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation in tackling problems facing us today. Among the many forms in which human spirit has tried to express its innermost yearnings and perceptions, music is perhaps the most universal. It symbolizes the yearnings for harmony, with oneself and with others; with nature and with the spiritual and the sacred within us and around us."
World Festival of Sacred Music-Los Angeles is a project of Foundation for World Arts, a non-profit organization, UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance (CIP) and EarthWays Foundation. Support for 2011 Festival is provided by The James Irvine Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission
