Giving to largest charities fell 11% in 2009 (Associated Press, 10/19/10).
The nation's largest charitable organizations saw an 11% decline in
donations. According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, donations in 2009
totaled $68.6 billion, down from more than $76 billion in 2008. In 2009, the
median amount raised by the 400 largest charities was $98.8 million, down
from $105 million in 2008. United Way Worldwide, Salvation Army, Food for
the Poor, Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund, and the American Cancer Society
reported a decline in 2009 giving. Catholic Charities USA, AmeriCares
Foundation, Feed the Children, and World Vision reported increased giving.
