ABOUT PAINTED OVER/UNDER

Kim Schoenstadt's Painted Over/Under Parts 1-4 is a year-long
project based on the mismatched color patterning created by
"graffiti maintenance" on embankments and other open walls
in the city. Each "Part" incorporates guest curators who,
according to their field, invite writers, artists, and architects to
create works on the walls in shifts. At the end of each Part the works
are painted over, creating a layered, abstracted painting defined by
the shapes of past projects. Prior to each "painting out," Schoenstadt
will apply vinyl cut into the shape of her own drawings over the
artist's wall to preserve portions of the work below. Part 4
will reveal her complete drawing, which will be constructed out of
fragments of the project's history.

The nature of Painted Over/Under poses some unique parameters. The
artwork may be painted or drawn onto the wall by someone other than the
artist themselves, should location prevent the artist's physical
presence at LACE. Previous artists have asked friends, family, or sent
out an open call for participants to help with the installation
process, which occurs during open gallery hours with the aim to engage
visitors in artists' practices and gallery processes.

Confirmed artists for the fall cycle include Adriana Lara, Anna Parkina,
Arabella Campbell, Gitte Schafer, Jazmin Lopez, Joanna Calle, Maaike
Schoorel, and Zarouhie Abdalian.
