Eligibility: The call is open to all emerging artists working in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Ventura and San Bernardino counties. All forms of painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, digital and installation art are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. All submitted art pieces should fall under the theme of "Our Urban Ocean," so pieces having to do with our ports, human uses of the ocean (i.e. scuba diving, water sports, beach activities), marine life affected by the urban ocean, and/or ocean pollution. The theme of your work should be how you see the urbanized coast and ocean and what it means to you.
We also require that you are available to be at the Urban Ocean Festival on both Saturday and Sunday, September 11-12, 2010.
Call for Art: The Aquarium of the Pacific is accepting images via JPEG format to be juried for its upcoming Urban Ocean Festival event. Up to 5 submissions only are welcome. There will be winners in each of the four categories, which will include painting/drawing, digital/photography, mixed media, and sculpture/3D. 1st place in each category will receive $500, and 2nd place will receive $250. One artist (selected from the first-place artists from each of the four categories) will then be selected as the Grand Prize winner and will receive an additional $250. Only the eight winners (1st and 2nd place for each category) will display their art at the festival.
"Urban Ocean Festival," held the weekend of September 11-12, 2010, will be a chance for families to explore and celebrate Southern California's Urban Ocean while learning about the human uses for the coastal ocean and the impacts on marine life. The weekend will include an art contest, poetry readings, food, booths, and educational activities.
Artists selected for this event may choose to sell their work onsite; please be advised that the Aquarium will charge commission.
Jury: This is a juried exhibition. All submissions will be juried by a panel from the Long Beach arts community with a broad range of expertise.
Media: Drawings, printmaking, digital/new media, photography, painting, installation, sculpture, etc., are all possibly valid. Selected pieces must be ready to either display on easel or stand alone on the ground. No pieces will have hanging capabilities. Please note here will be no access to additional lighting.
Original artwork in any medium within the exhibit theme will be accepted for review; however, we currently cannot support video or sound-based media.
Submission Guidelines: In an effort to conserve resources, the Aquarium accepts only digital images for consideration. Submit up to FIVE digital images to http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/multimedia/call4art/ Please include: Your name and contact information, artist statement, and an image list, which should include digital file names, title, medium, and dimensions.
Submission images must meet the following specifications:
File names are the artist's last name followed by the entry number (i.e. Jones1.jpg).
Image files should be in HIGH QUALITY JPEG format, images should be no smaller than 1000 pixels in any direction and 72dpi. Images must be oriented properly (i.e. top of image is top of artwork).
Notification: Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance by email no later than September 7, 2010 You will be notified which piece(s) will be exhibited and receive more details on the Urban Ocean Festival.
