Development Internship, Santa Monica Museum of Art
The Santa Monica Museum of Art is seeking an enthusiastic, talented
student from a local university or artschool to work as a
development/fundraising intern. The development intern will have the
opportunity to work with the development department and gain a thorough
understanding of how fundraising sustains an art museum.
Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of this position include compilation and
organization of membership drive materials; generation of acknowledgment
letters for members; compilation of information for grant applications;
donor research; administration and organization of the database, grant
files, and archives; and assistance with openings, special events, and
educational programs as needed.
Requirements:
The successful applicant should have excellent writing and communication
skills, should be organized with an attention to detail, and must be
computer proficient. The ideal candidate should also be independently
responsible, diligent, and directed. Interns work not only with all
members of the staff at the museum, but with visitors, artists, arts
professionals, and a variety of students. Applicants must be
enthusiastic and interested in dealing with the museum's audience and
colleagues.
Commitment:
The museum's internship program is ongoing, based loosely on a semester
schedule (Fall/Winter, Winter/Spring,Summer); interns are expected to
work a minimum of 15 hours per week for at least 1 semester or ideally,
an academic year. Although applications will be accepted on a rolling
basis, our first priority is to find an intern to start in the fall
semester (or earlier if possible).
This internship is unpaid, but in lieu of salary, interns have the
opportunity to receive course credit. Additionally, through its
internship program, the museum hopes to offer students an exciting and
challenging opportunity to gain professional skills and knowledge of the
art world while they, in turn, provide the museum with invaluable
assistance in running an ambitious arts program.Interns work intimately
with staff members and are encouraged to work to their strengths. They
often gain valuable insights into their own interests and abilities. As
an integral part of the institution, they take part in all museum
business, from staff meetings to openings and special events.
