Call for proposals from artists based in Latin America, for public interventions in downtown Lima

Five projects will be selected to be presented in late October during "La Gran Semana de Lima".

In recent years a number of initiatives have been undertaken to renovate downtown Lima, the historic center to a growing metropolis of over 8 million inhabitants. Within this framework, the city center has become a site with great potential for the development of contemporary art projects.

For the second consecutive year, Alta Tecnología Andina – ATA, Fundación Telefónica and Museo de Arte de Lima – MALI invite artists living in Latin America to take part in Centro Abierto 2010, and present site-specific projects for eight possible locations at Plaza San Martín and nearby areas in Lima’s historic downtown center (Plaza San Martín, Jirón de la Unión, Museo Andrés del Castillo, Parque de la Democracia, Pasaje Encarnación, Teatro Colón, and the buildings Encarnación, Sudamericana, and Compañía Peruana de Teléfonos).

Proposals by individual artists or collectives are welcome. All projects must be original (not previously produced) and may include drawing, painting, printing, photography, sculpture, installation, performance, video, sound, electronic, digital art, and other related media.

The selection committee will choose five projects, each of which will receive USD 6,500 for production, installation and dismantling of the work and USD 1,000 for the artist or collective. Artists not living in Lima will also receive support for air tickets as well as accommodation for up to ten days during the production and installation of the work.

The five projects will be presented at the end of October during "La Gran Semana de Lima". This annual event, organized by the City of Lima, is directed at a broad and diverse audience and consists of musical, artistic, and other cultural activities.

Important Dates

-June 05–August 06: Online registration (www.centroabierto.org), proposals will be received until 18:00 hours (UTC/GMT -5 h) August 6, 2010.
-September 01: Selected projects will be announced.
-October 11: Starting date for the production of projects.
-October 22–November 01: Exhibition of site-specific works during "La Gran Semana de Lima".

Centro Abierto 2009

The previous edition of Centro Abierto, received 172 proposals from 11 countries in Latin America (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela).

The projects selected in the first edition were:

-Orden Público (Public order) by Cuban artist James Bonachea, intervened the site of Parque de la Democracia by installing red, blue and yellow emergency lights in the park’s street-lighting system.

-La foto salió movida (Blurred photo) by Peruvian artist Sandra Nakamura, covered the facade of historic Teatro Colón with the fragmented image of the inside of the theater, as if the facade had been removed.

-Identidad (Identity) by Argentinian artist Fabián Nonino, developed an interactive installation on the façade of the building of the Compañía Peruana de Telefónos. The public sent photos from their cell phones and saw their image being reshaped by thousands of emblematic national images (which took the place of pixels), and projected in real time onto the façade.

-Yo y San Martín (Me and San Martín) by Chilean artist Francisca Sánchez, constructed a platform surrounding the monument to Independence hero José de San Martín, leveling the public’s relation to the hero.
