An Art Exhibition & Literary Contest

OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS & WRITERS:
In September 2009, a life-sized portrait of Dodger legend Tommy Lasorda was unveiled at the Smithsonian Institution´s National Portrait Gallery to commemorate his legacy as one of baseball´s greatest goodwill ambassadors. On the occasion of his portrait being placed under the same roof as those of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, Lasorda remarked, "I just can´t believe something like this is happening to me." When a reporter asked Tommy what was next for him, his reply was, "Heaven." Little did Tommy know at the time that the next major honor in his storied career would be LASORDAPALOOZA.
Thanks to the Baseball Reliquary, Tommy´s fans and critics alike now have an opportunity to contribute their own commentary on his legacy through an art exhibition, literary contest, and special program. Entitled LASORDAPALOOZA, the art exhibition and literary contest will be presented in the gallery and display cases of the Pomona Public Library, Pomona, California, from April 12-May 28, 2010. A special program, including a Tommy Lasorda Look-Alike Contest (open to both men and women), will be held at the Pomona Public Library on Saturday, May 15, 2010.
Artists are invited to submit Tommy Lasorda-related artworks for display in the exhibition. Works in all media are accepted (including paintings, drawings, digital works, DVDs, etc.). All submissions must arrive by March 31, 2010. If you are interested in submitting a work, please contact the Baseball Reliquary to make arrangements for shipment or delivery. The Baseball Reliquary will cover all return shipping costs. All works submitted will be displayed; a jury will select the two most outstanding artworks, and those artists will receive a cash prize of $100 each.
Writers are invited to submit an essay for the literary contest based on the theme, "Why I Love Tommy Lasorda" or "Why I Hate Tommy Lasorda," depending upon your particular viewpoint. Essays should be 500 words or less and submitted electronically by March 31, 2010. A selection of the essays will be featured in the exhibition. A panel will choose the two best essays, and cash prizes of $100 each will be awarded to their authors. In addition, the prize-winning essays will be posted on the Baseball Reliquary Web site.
The Baseball Reliquary is a nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to fostering an appreciation of American art and culture through the context of baseball history.
