Saint Joseph Ballet (SJB) is searching for a new Managing Director to partner with Artistic Director Melanie Rios Glaser and a highly engaged staff and Board of Directors to lead its to its next level of organizational success. It is the search committee's intention to identify and engage a new Managing Director by November 2006.

As a pioneer in employing arts training as a tool to meet pressing community social needs, Beth Burns founded Saint Joseph Ballet in 1983 and the organization has been positively changing young lives ever since. Located in Santa Ana, California, a city that leads the nation in urban hardship, many of the 400 students who attend Saint Joseph Ballet each year live with parents who work two or more jobs, and share a small one or two bedroom apartment with other relatives or families. At its core, Saint Joseph Ballet is committed to fulfilling its mission of helping at-risk youth leave behind a life hindered by poverty's imposing obstacles, and embrace a life filled with hope and opportunity.

The Managing Director will serve as Co-CEO and chief
operating/administrative officer of the organization. S/he will have overall responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the organization and will be jointly responsible with the Artistic Director for the development and implementation of strategies designed to help the SJB achieve its programmatic and financial goals within an operating plan and budget formally approved by the Board.

The Managing Director will:

* Understand and enthusiastically embrace the collaborative role of the Managing Director in partnering with the Artistic Director to further SJB's organizational goals
* Support the development of a long range vision for SJB that combines the Artistic Director and Board's vision into a realistic and achievable action plan
* Support the Board of Directors' effort to strengthen their
critical role in extending SJB's reach into potential communities of influence and support
* Oversee and direct the organizations outreach,
marketing/branding and audience development efforts
* In conjunction with the board and the Development Director, lead SJB's fund raising initiatives
* Have the ability to interact comfortably and successfully with SJB's patrons and supporters, including leaders from both the private and public sectors
* Recognize and augment the base of financial support by leading organized cultivation and coordinated development activities
* Carefully manage SJB's growth and financial resources to protect its stability and maintain a balanced budget on an ongoing basis
* Develop substantial ties to the Board of Directors and other leaders of the community
* Share with the Artistic Director the role of primary
representative to the organization's constituencies
* In partnership with the Artistic Director, mentor and manage the professional staff to achieve the highest level of productivity in service of SJB's mission and stated strategic financial and artistic goals

Skills

The Managing Director will:

* Be a recognizable and visible community leader for SJB who
reflects the organization's sensitivity to the culture and tradition of the community
* Be able to work effectively with the board, helping to guide its development, set its agenda in cooperation with its officers, and enable it to fully realize its potential to assist the staff in defining and achieving SJB's short and long-range goals
* Cultivate and interact with prospective donors, board members, and others whose financial support is important to SJB
* Be able to work effectively with various representatives from a broad collection of community institutions and agencies to establish opportunities for new collaborations aimed at expanding opportunities for SJB.
* Be able to manage the annual budget and develop ongoing
strategies to strengthen SJB's the financial position
* Lead the strategic development of SJB's assets and programmatic initiatives.
* Be able to create a positive, rewarding work environment for the staff, attract and hold skilled people and delegate authority effectively.
* Partner effectively with the Artistic Director in the sharing of authority and responsibility, balance concern for administrative and financial feasibility with support for artistic and programmatic objectives.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a history of success in leading not-for-profit service or community-based arts organization(s) and have the demonstrated ability to inspire the board, staff and patrons. S/he will have the capacity to collaborate with a diverse group of artists and directly support the staff in the creation of dance, academic and family service programming. Candidates must show the personal maturity needed to exercise effective leadership and the ability to develop a constructive partnership with the Artistic Director. S/he will exhibit energy, dedication, political maturity and an eagerness to be active within both the local and national arts/social service community. S/he will be an active leader and collaborator with the local business, cultural, political and academic communities as a representative of both arts, social service programming and the work of Saint Joseph Ballet in particular.

Compensation and Benefits
