Open Call for the 12th Annual Shikish Exhibition
at the George J. Doizaki Gallery

The Japanese American Cultural and Community Center (JACCC) is currently
accepting submissions for the 12th Annual Shikishi Exhibition opening on
January 3, 2010 and would like to invite all of the diverse voices in
our community to participate.

Shikishi paper boards have been used in Japan since the twelfth century
for painting and writing poetry. Today, inscribed shikishi are given as
a gift to mark a memorable or special occasion. In 1998, Hirokazu
Kosaka, JACCCís Artistic Director, fused traditional and contemporary
notions of the shikishi by asking over 500 people to celebrate the New
Year by expressing themselves using the boards.

Based on the theme, use the shikishi to express your thoughts, hopes,
and dreams for the New Year. There are no guidelines in using the
shikishi; you may write on it, use it as a canvas even cut it up to
construct a 3-D object.

In the past participants have included celebrities, local personalities,
politicians, artists, priests, children, writers, and community members.

Those interested in participating in this yearís exhibit may come by
the JACCC to pick up a free shikishi at the JACCC or contact Yachiyo
Beal or Gavin Kelley at (213) 628-2725 to ask for a shikishi board to be
mailed to them. You may also purchase one at your local Japanese market

The deadline to submit all work is December 22, 2009.

The JACCC is located at 244 S. San Pedro Street in Little Tokyo in
downtown Los Angeles. Convenient parking is located on San Pedro,
Second and Third Streets adjacent to the JACCC.
