The Museum Folkwang is one of the most renowned art museums in Germany, featuring an excellent art collection with international appeal. Alongside paintings and sculptures from the 19th century, the classical modern period, the post-war era after 1945, and works of contemporary art, the museum also hosts a selection of photography, archaeology, world art, poster art, and other artefacts.

The museum is the first of its kind in Germany to offer free admission to its collection. Numerous temporary exhibitions address different audiences. From an organisational perspective, the Museum Folkwang is a unit of the City of Essen.

Curator (f/m) of 19th and 20th century art
The position is also available for job-sharing to be filled by two part-time roles on a 50% basis.

Your tasks:
The curator of the 19th and 20th century art collection plans and manages, in coordination with the museum’s management, the procurement, placement and further development of the collection of 19th century and classical modern art:

–Definition of the collection’s key developments
–Curating and realisation of permanent and temporary exhibitions
–Preparation of the collection’s catalogue and development, and maintenance of its online presentation
–Research and cost assessment of possible purchases
–Documentation and cataloguing of acquisitions
–Planning of research, restoration and conservation measures
–Management of relationships including, but not limited to, experts, collectors and art dealers

Your skills:

–Masters degree or similar (e.g. German “Magister”) in art history with relevant specialisation, preferably with PhD
–Several years of relevant professional experience, preferably international
–Fluent proficiency in spoken and written German and English, other foreign languages desirable
–Initiative and good social skills, confidence and excellent personal conduct

Remuneration is subject to pay category 14 TVöD, the German salary system for public employees and servants. This is a temporary position, initially limited to a term of four years. If both parties agree, the position can be extended thereafter.
