Voices UnBroken is a Bronx-based non-profit organization dedicated to providing under-heard members of the community – primarily youth, ages 12-24 – with the tools and opportunity for creative self-expression. Through high quality creative writing workshops in juvenile justice facilities, group homes, residential treatment facilities, jails, and various other transitional and alternative settings, Voices UnBroken nurtures the inherent need in all people to tell their stories and be heard. It is our belief that this telling of stories and sharing of dreams leads to individual and community growth. Voices UnBroken was founded in 2000 with a single workshop at the high school for adolescent girls on Rikers Island and has grown to serve over 700 young people each year. Voices UnBroken is seeking an Executive Director (ED) to increase, strengthen and diversify revenue to support and grow existing programming with an operating budget of $400,000 and a full-time and part-time staff of 12.

Voices Unbroken is at a critical moment in its organizational evolution. We seek an passionate, enthusiastic, nonprofit entrepreneur, who will lead this organization and act as the primary spokesperson to attract new funding sources and cultivate new relationships. The new ED must be self-motivated and be ready for an exciting new challenge.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

FUNDRAISING & RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

• Serve as the chief fundraiser for Voices UnBroken

• Prepare, implement and evaluate annual development strategy

• Lead all resource development activities, including proposal preparation and reporting

• Maintain existing and secure new public and private funding

• Sustain exiting fee-for-service partnerships and explore opportunities to expand

• Coordination of individual donor campaigns and events

• Maintain and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders, including elected officials and other external partners

FISCAL MANAGEMENT

• Prepare annual budget to be approved by the Board and ensure that the organization operates within budget guidelines and uses sound fiscal management practices to ensure that resources are used efficiently and effectively.

• Supervise bookkeeper to ensure that all expenses are properly accounted for in QuickBooks

• Work closely with accountant to prepare organization’s annual audit/review and to complete all necessary filings

• Monitor and report to the Board on finances of the organization.

BOARD RELATIONS & ENGAGEMENT

• Work closely with the Board of Directors to maintain and build a strong, diverse, motivated Board

• Maintain official records and documents, and coordinate with the Board to ensure compliance with Federal, State and local regulations as applicable

• Facilitate learning opportunities for Board members

• Scheduling and preparing materials for board meetings

PROGRAMS

• Maintain and strengthen current programming

• Ensure continued programmatic excellence

• Analyze participant data to identify trends, strengths and opportunities for programming and to create reports for funders and key stakeholders

• Maintain and grow organizational relationships with key partners, agencies/organizations that result in continued and added fee-for-service revenue

• Actively engage in strategic local and city-wide groups and committees in conversations around justice, foster care and arts related issues

INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT & OPERATIONS

• Oversee day-to-day operations

• Assess and strengthen organizational systems

• Ensure that organizational communications consistently reflect the organization’s mission and values

• Manage HR processes, including payroll and time off

• Recruitment and retention of talented staff

• Directly supervise and evaluate on-site staff; indirectly supervise off-site staff

• Identify and engage consultants as necessary

• Engage in strategic planning with the staff and Board

QUALIFICATIONS

• Feel accountable to organization’s mission, participants, board, stakeholders

• BA required

• At least 10 years of professional experience in the nonprofit sector (arts, youth development, justice fields preferred).

• At least 5 years of supervisory experience

• Proven track record of successful fundraising

• Budget management experience

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Detail oriented, adaptable, organized and able to successfully manage multiple projects and tasks

• Be confident in making decisions independently

• Commitment to work from a positive youth development framework

• Commitment to working in the Bronx

• Experience with QuickBooks (or other bookkeeping software) & MS Office, Fluent in MS Excel
