Museum Teacher

The Autry is dedicated to exploring and sharing the stories, experiences, and perceptions of the diverse peoples of the American West. Through the work of its dynamic staff, the Autry promotes education, research, exhibitions, and public programs. Located in scenic Griffith Park, the Autry provides a collaborative work environment for its employees and attracts highly qualified and motivated professionals.

The Autry seeks a Part-Time Museum teacher facilitate engaging educational experiences for a range of museum visitors-from students on field trips to families and others who visit the museum. Museum teachers utilize a range of tools, from hands on replicas, to craft activities, to working with our gold panning activity. Museum teachers bring the study of the West to life. Museum Teachers also participate in the development and evaluation of new museum education programs, as well as in the design of new exhibition-based curriculum and activities. Additionally they help staff our gold panning activity on weekends and help with large scale events such as family festivals and other events as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

* Conduct gallery tours, lessons and activities for students grade pre-K-12
* Conduct research regarding upcoming changing exhibitions
* Design and implement grade-appropriate lesson materials
* Participate in exhibition information sessions, monthly Museum Teachers' meetings, Education/Programs division meetings, and continuing education opportunities
* Perform other tasks that pertain to the responsibilities of the Education Division

OTHER FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* Bachelor's Degree (or in progress on such a degree) in education, history, museum studies or related field preferred, as well as prior experience in teaching educational programs in a museum or other informal educational environment.

* A desire to work with a diverse population of museum visitors.

* Enthusiasm for teaching and experience working with children and teachers

* Basic understanding of educational theories or techniques, age/grade characteristics, and/or child developmental stages;

* Excellent communication and writing skills;

* Ability to work independently;

* Creativity and flexibility, with sensitivity to working with diverse audiences, and strong interpersonal skills;

* Bilingual fluency or working knowledge in Spanish and a teaching credential are preferred, but not required.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a position that requires a great deal of mobility, since Museum Teachers spend a great deal of time on their feet. May occasionally need to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., push and pull up to 75 lbs. with the assistance of a cart. Occasionally must climb a 6-foot ladder to retrieve educational supplies from storage. Frequent repetitive finger movement is required for computer work.
