Banff Artist-in-Residence (BAiR) opportunity
BAiR programs in Visual + Digital Arts provide time and space for artists, curators, and arts professionals to create, research, experiment with and develop production techniques, cultivating new directions in their work.

BAiR New Materiality
Program dates: January 11–February 12, 2016

BAiR New Materiality is a program dedicated to contemporary practice, challenging participants to engage with materials in unconventional ways and push the boundaries of traditional artistic mediums. In this five-week intensive residency, participants will create, research, and experiment using our extensive on-campus production facilities, engaging with the broader international artistic community at The Banff Centre. Walter Phillips Gallery curator and 2017 Alberta Biennial co-curator Peta Rake will be on hand to provide consultation and curatorial insights through studio visits.

BAiR late winter intensive
Program dates February 29–March 25, 2016

In this intensive four-week program, participants will benefit from the insight and consultation of guest curator Naomi Potter (Esker Foundation), participant-driven critique, artist presentations, demonstrations in various visual and digital art production techniques, and being part of a community of artists, curators, and creative practitioners each committed to their practice. Scheduled programming is light and designed to allow for ample time to work on individual self-directed projects or to collaborate with others.

Thematic residencies offer a structured program where artists are brought together with faculty mentors to investigate a specific theme or topic.

Indigenous residency

This residency invites Indigenous visual and digital artists, curators, writers, and cultural producers from all nations to come together, create new work, and discuss topics pertinent to their culture and contemporary Indigenous art practice. A two-day symposium with leading Indigenous thinkers, artists, and curators will cap off the program.

Practicum opportunity
Arts Practicum programs are intense experiential learning opportunities that marry technical training in the arts and arts administration with hands-on, real world experiences.

Visual Arts Indigenous Administration and Research
Program Dates: January 11–December 16, 2016
Apply by: November 10

This practicum is designed to enhance knowledge and skills in arts administration for Indigenous practitioners. The participant will work with and be mentored by staff from all areas of the Visual + Digital Arts department: Creative Residencies, Walter Phillips Gallery, and the Banff International Curatorial Institute. Enrollment to this program is limited to individuals of Indigenous descent (status, non-status, Métis, or Inuit) who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. This program is ideal for recent graduates of art history, museum studies, or studio-based programs eager to gain professional experience.
