Monthly Weekend / Vacation Family Art Studio Coordinator

Description:

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks a part-time art studio coordinator to
develop and facilitate programs for families in the Skirball's
drop-in art studio. All programs presented in the art studio embody the
innovative sensibility and core values of the Skirball's interactive
destination Noah's Ark at the Skirball and the broader Cultural
Center, and serve its diverse and sizable audience of family visitors.

The Art Studio Coordinator reports to the Head of Family Programs.

Time frame:

The weekend art studio is open the last weekend of each month, in
addition to extended hours during winter, spring, and summer breaks.

The part-time art studio coordinator position begins in September, 2013
and runs through June, 2014. There is a possibility for continued
employment over the summer.

Applicants must be able to work 8-hour days both Saturday and Sunday
during weekends when the art studio is open, plus 5-10 additional prep
hours, depending on the project. Extended hours (up to 35 hours per
week) during periods of school vacations are expected, including one or
both weekend days.

Responsibilities:

* Develops, plans, and implements programs for the drop-in art studio
that embody the sensibility and values of the Noah's Ark galleries
and the broader Skirball Cultural Center.
* Runs the drop-in studio program during weekend art studio days and
weekday holiday breaks.
* Creates a welcoming studio environment with a workshop / lab feel
that inspires visitors to think creatively, work together, and try new
things.
* Differentiates projects in ways that visitors of different ages -
from toddlers to grandparents - can understand and experience
successfully.
* Creates signage, sets up studio, selects materials, and directs
adult and teen volunteers and intern studio assistants.
* Represents and promotes the Skirball Cultural Center to studio
visitors.
* Administers and collects visitor surveys, and prepares written
evaluation of each studio project.

Qualifications:

* Experience in creating inventive, hands-on art-making activities
with non-traditional materials (e.g., repurposed, organic, recycled).
* Experience in facilitating art programs for families in a creative
space (e.g., drop-in workshops, classrooms, studios, etc.).
* Background in art education and/or visual arts (as opposed to craft
making).
* Experience in working successfully with families and young children
in high-volume settings.
* Effective communication skills and the ability to work well with
supervisors, colleagues, volunteers, and the public.
* Some knowledge of Jewish culture and heritage desirable.
