'How do fields external to the arts utilise drawing as a tool?'
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship from exceptionally well qualified students who want to embark on a full-time research degree programme commencing in Autumn Term 2013
A suitably qualified student is required to identify and categorise the ways in which STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and other fields external to the art and design domain use drawing and visualization tools to enable thought and communication
The project is deliberately focused on attracting researchers who wish to work with these commonalities of practice to determine and define a range of drawing-based approaches across diverse fields. There will also be the opportunity to identify a taxonomy of relationships between modes of drawing and fields in which they are applied.
The candidate must necessarily have an applied knowledge to develop a methodology that allows for a valid identification of commonalities of application and practice across fields
The project provides an excellent opportunity to create an inter-disciplinary outcome providing an analysis of data collection methods and principles in relation to the specificity of drawing and visualization, thus providing a rigorous and critical interpretation of the relationships between drawing practices and their roles as aids for thought and communication in STEM and other disciplines outside accepted art and design fields
As a research student you will become involved in leading edge research, and provided with research skills training and support from internationally recognised academics.
Each studentship is valued at £13,726 plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. Applicants must be eligible to pay tuition fees at UK/EU rates. The full-time research degree programme will commencing in the Autumn Term 2013.
The deadline for applications is 13th May 2013.
Enquiries should be made to Emma Nadin (School of Arts Research PGR Administrator) E.L.Nadin@lboro.ac.uk
