DEADLINE
Application materials must be received at or before 5:00 p.m., Pacific Standard Time (PST) Wednesday, December 19, 2012.

BUDGET
An artwork budget of $750,000 has been established inclusive of artist fees and all costs associated with the design, fabrication, structural engineering and installation of artwork.

OVERVIEW The Civic Art Program seeks to commission an artist or artist team to create an artwork or series of works that distinguish the Hall of Justice as one of the most significant historic buildings in downtown Los Angeles. The Hall was built in 1925, shuttered in 1994 after the Northridge earthquake, and is undergoing a major renovation. The Hall will serve as the headquarters for Los Angeles County's Sheriff Department and the District Attorney's offices.

Located in the burgeoning Los Angeles civic center core called Bunker Hill, the Hall of Justice is in close proximity to El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument, the new 12-acre Grand Park, City Hall, the Los Angeles County Hall of Administration, the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels, U.S. District Court, Disney Hall and The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The artwork for the Hall of Justice will become an important contribution to Bunker Hill's public art collection.

GOALS OF THE ARTWORK
The work or works of art created for the Hall of Justice should sensitively honor the historic architectural elements of the building, while presenting a strong contemporary statement that recognizes but does not attempt to imitate or compete with the hisoric features of the Hall. Artwork must be formal and tasteful, respectful of the tenant departments, and in alignment with the purposes of the building: criminal justice, public safety and law enforcement. Lastly, the artwork should take into consideration the history of the building and how it relates to downtown.

ELIGIBILITY
This commission is open to artists or artist teams who reside in Los Angeles County. Preference will be given to artists who have not had a previous commission with Los Angeles County. The artist or team selected for this commission will exhibit experience with large-scale, permanent sculptural artworks and a clear perspective on how to create an appropriate contemporary artwork in a historic setting. See "Criteria for Selection" for required qualifications.

OPTIONAL: TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE WORKSHOP
A technical assistance workshop will be offered on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 5:00PM for interested applicants to learn more about the Hall of Justice civic art project and the Los Angeles County Civic Art Program application process.
