Calling all curators: 5x5 Temporary Public Art Project

AMP's picture

5x5 is a public art initiative that will result in twenty-five groundbreaking temporary public art installations that will be installed concurrently throughout Washington, DC in the spring of 2012. The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) seeks five highly-experienced and innovative curators to each identify and work with five artists to create exciting, temporary art works in a variety of media and art forms in public spaces throughout Washington, DC. The resulting twenty-five temporary public art installations will activate and enliven vacant, dormant, and open spaces and bring cutting edge creativity and artistic expression to neighborhoods across DC.

Based on their submitted qualifications, 8–10 curators or curatorial teams will be shortlisted and awarded an honorarium of 1,000 USD to create a site-specific proposal that outlines their curatorial approach and vision. Shortlisted curators will be given a list of sites to work from; DCCAH is securing sites for 5x5 through its partnerships with private property owners and other District agencies such as the DC Office of Planning (OP), National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC), DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). DCCAH is open to including sites proposed by the selected Curators.

Currently, DCCAH has allocated up to 100,000 USD per curator for the artist and curator fees, design, fabrication, installation and de-installation of five sites. The five selected curators will lead the 5x5 implementation process and will manage and oversee each artist's concept(s), budget(s), and schedule(s). Additional funds for reimbursement of travel expenses may be available.

For more information about 5x5 and to submit your qualifications please see dcarts.dc.gov. Qualifications will be accepted from July 29, 2011 to September 16, 2011.

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities' mission is to provide grant funds, programs and educational activities that encourage diverse artistic expressions and learning opportunities, so that all District of Columbia residents and visitors can experience the rich culture of our city.
