Space 118 offers residencies, Mumbai, India

There is a great opportunity for contemporary artists to work in Mumbai, and I am really happy to help make the connection for anyone interested! This city is fascinating, and the very active contemporary art community is warm and receptive to newcomers, as I have found since moving here in September of last year. It is not easy to find studio space, so this is a big leg up for any artists who want to come and work for a few months and see what this place is about.

There are four separate studios at Space 118 in downtown Mumbai, that are awarded to emerging artists based on a simple application process.
The studios are approximately 350-500 square feet with 15 foot ceiling heights in old warehouse shed, in a secure area in the middle of a fairly densely populated neighborhood. There is no rental fee for the studios, but artists are asked to give one work of art to Space 118 at the close of the residency period, and there is a refundable deposit of 30,000 Rupees (approximately $650). Space 118 is about fifteen minutes from the area where most of the Mumbai art galleries are located, in the heart of the Colaba and Kala Ghoda districts.

Residencies are available for two to six months, beginning in September 2011 and into 2012. November through February are the most pleasant times to be in Mumbai, climate-wise.

Have a look at the Space 118 website at www.space118.com and please feel free to be in touch with me if you have questions. Alternately of course you can contact Saloni Doshi, Director of Space 118 directly.
