1. Since 2007, the Foundation's grant program has awarded 10-14 non-profit institutions annually with funds to support the production of new work by visual artists. In 2010 the Foundation initiated a thematic focus to explore the relationship between art and site in a dematerializing world. We are pleased to announce the 12 projects that received support:

Theaster Gates / Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha, NE
Lara Schnitger / Sculpture Center, Long Island City, NY
James Benning / Art Resources Transfer, New York, NY
Nick Tobier / Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit, Detroit, MI
Cindy Bernard / Foundation for Art Resources, Los Angeles, CA
Spectres of Liberty / Franklin Furnace, Brooklyn, NY
Postcommodity / Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe, NM
Michael Mercil / Stratford Ecological Center, Delaware, OH
Donna Conlon and Jonathan Harker / TeoréTica, San José , Costa Rica
Michel De Broin / The Third of May Arts Inc., Toronto, Ontario
Ernesto Oroza / The Vizcayans (on behalf of Vizcaya Museum and Gardens), Miami, FL
Swoon / Transformazium / Braddock Redux // Transformazium, Braddock, PA

2. In 2011, Harpo Foundation will continue the 2010 thematic focus but with a renewed emphasis on projects that directly address the interchange and dialogue between the existential and the virtual. Wanting to expand our understanding of the role each play in contemporary life, artistic projects that grapple with the dialectic between the non-locality of the digital world and the existential physicality of our everyday environment will be considered first. Projects that put these two worlds into dialogue with each other, so as to comment upon each other and allow the qualities of each experience to be illuminated, are of specific interest to the Foundation.
Proposal Deadline: April 15, 2011

Annually, two Native American artists living in the U.S. will receive a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center, which will include room and board, a private studio, and a 500 USD travel stipend.
Proposal Deadline: February 15 for a 2011 residency.
