ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

The Skirball Cultural Center (SCC) of Los Angeles, one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing cultural institutions in the United States, is seeking an Assistant Director of Education to oversee its offerings for children 0-8 and their families. The Education Department supports SCC's communal mission by providing educational programming of the highest caliber for diverse audiences of all ages. SCC's programs for young people and families will expand significantly with the opening in Summer 2007 of Noah's pArk, a major new indoor/outdoor, participatory destination for children and families.

The Assistant Director of Education reports to the Director of Education, who oversees the three divisions of the Education Department:
1) children 0-8 and families, and Noah's pArk destination;
2)schoolchildren 9-18; and
3) adults.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Manages all Education Department staff focused on children 0-8 and families to achieve program goals and audience and income targets. Staff currently includes one Family Programs specialist, one Family Programs assistant, and one Noah's pArk concept/content developer. It will expand to include a gallery staff/facilities manager, a corps of paid and volunteer gallery facilitators, and other staff and contractors as needed to serve public, school group, and other group audiences

* Generates and oversees budget for all SCC offerings for children 0-8 and families, including Noah's pArk

* Oversees daily operational and education-related aspects of Noah's pArk, including public, school group, and other group offerings, as well as Center-wide offerings for children 0-8 and families

* Spearheads grassroots campaign to build both widespread community interest in Noah's pArk and a large and diverse public audience through networking and creating/implementing community outreach plan

* Sets SCC audience and content goals for children 0-8 and their families in partnership with Family Programs specialist and Noah's pArk concept/content developer; ensures that all programs and content meet these goals and embody the Skirball's cross-cultural, arts-based,
intergenerational vision and progressive, down-to-earth sensibility

* Participates in fundraising efforts for SCC children's and family programs

QUALIFICATIONS:

* M.A. or higher in Education, Arts Administration, or related field, with an emphasis on children 0-8 and/or family learning

* 5+ years of managing/mentoring a team of staff, functioning as a team builder

* Proven ability to help build sizable and diverse family audiences

* Established relationships with community leaders, organizations and centers in Los Angeles that serve diverse children and families

* 5+ years of professional experience in family and/or experiential learning within a community learning center, college or university, children's museum, and/or other cultural institution; some
direct experience with creating and/facilitating participatory children's/family programs

* Experience in creating and managing large budgets

* Excellent oral and written communication skills

* Fluency in Spanish desirable
