The horns and tusks growing from the heads of many mammals are used primarily as weapons against those of their own species. They are used to settle disputes of dominance, especially during mating season, and when they are not physically employed in tests of strength, they serve as symbols of seniority and power. The threat of force is maintained through a constant display of the tools of force.
