In Miami Beach, home to ArtCenter/South Florida, sea level rise is not a future concept. It’s an everyday reality that demands attention and solutions from all corners of the city. Flooding, both from rising tides and storms, is a common occurrence, making roads impassable, damaging homes and stressing the island’s infrastructure. The City of Miami Beach is being proactive in addressing sea level rise, investing $500 million dollars to raise roads and install pumps to protect the island and the people who live there. Such a wide-scale problem, however, touches all facets of the city’s social, economic and cultural life. Like many other cities globally, the city of Miami Beach is embarking on creating a resiliency plan that incorporates the voices of residents and experts and will prepare the city to survive, adapt and grow as it faces a warming climate and other 21st century challenges.

ArtCenter’s new Art in Public Life residency is a chance for artists to have a seat at the table, contributing ideas and engaging the public in ways to address these pressing issues. Over a year, an artist will be embedded in the City of Miami Beach, helping to develop its resiliency plan. The Artist in Residence will have the opportunity to help address issues from coastal flooding to affordable housing and public transit, among others. Throughout the residency, the selected artist will develop artworks and public programs for and with the community, as well as provide meaningful insights to the city during this critical phase of planning. The results of the residency could have far-reaching impacts, as the work will be shared with other cities around the world facing similar challenges.

Who we’re looking for: The Art in Public Life residency is based on the premise that art can drive social and political innovation. As a result, we are looking for artists interested in interacting with urban communities and the way people in those communities imagine the future in the face of large-scale challenges. In addition, we are looking for candidates who can connect their artistic practice to other fields of knowledge, like architecture, science, public policy and urban planning, in order to create new models for public action.

Eligibility: Because of the length of the residency, this opportunity is only open to U.S. citizens, non-U.S. citizens who have legal permanent residency status in the United States, or applicants who are non-U.S. citizens with valid visas to work in the United States. Note: ArtCenter does not provide nor cover fees associated with visas or travel documentation.

What we offer: $25,000 stipend for one-year residency, housing in Miami Beach, and a maximum of $7,500 in production funds. The residency will begin April 1, 2018.
