Request for proposals issued for public artwork in New LaGuardia Central Terminal B

LaGuardia Gateway Partners, the private group leading the 5.1 billion USD redevelopment of LaGuardia Airport's Central Terminal B, is seeking expressions of interest for the creation of several large-scale public art installations, sculptures and panels to be displayed throughout the new terminal.

The new 35-gate Central Terminal B will feature bright spaces with natural lighting throughout. Plans for the project include dual pedestrian bridges spanning active aircraft taxi lanes—a first in the world—that connect the headhouse to two island concourses.

Selected artwork for the terminal will be reflective of New York City, making travelers feel the presence and energy of New York from the moment they arrive. Pieces will be selected that represent the many diverse communities that compose the fabric of the city.

"New York City is synonymous with art and creativity," said Stewart Steeves, Chief Executive Officer of LaGuardia Gateway Partners. "We look forward to selecting works of art that will bring the unique sense-of-place to the terminal, and create visually interesting spaces that improve the overall passenger experience and match the stunning architecture of the new terminal."

"I'm very eager to see what talented artists across New York have in mind for public art at the new terminal," said Marcello Dantas, art curator for LaGuardia Central Terminal B. "I'm excited to see how artists can capture the essence of New York and create pieces that highlight the terminal in new and unique ways. I look forward to reviewing the submissions."

Artists wishing to be considered are required to submit a maximum 10-page resume with a portfolio, short biography, and proof of experience in creating large scale public art works. All submissions should be sent via e-mail to art@laguardiacentral.com and are due by September 15, 2017.

Following the submission period, selected artists will be invited to the next stage of the selection process to submit for any or all of the art locations throughout the terminal. Final proposals will be reviewed at the end of October 2017. The selected artists will be required to submit a creative proposal for works that are permanent, original and designed specifically for the terminal by Oct 31, 2017. Development and fabrication will take place during 2018/19.

Artwork will be featured between levels two and four of the terminal, in five permanent locations. These areas include the center of the headhouse, suspended features cascading over the east and west escalators, the check-in wall and the central retail and concession area on level four of the terminal.
