OPEN CALL

UPROOT

Artists working at all levels and in all media are invited to apply for inclusion in the group exhibition UPROOT. Submissions will be accepted through September 13.

For the Fall 2017 exhibition, UPROOT, Smack Mellon will present an exhibition engaging with the current state of affairs since the 2016 presidential election. The exhibition runs from November 18th through December 31st.

The exhibition will form around curated artworks, artifacts, objects, mandates, proposals, performances, and public programs. In collaboration with curators, collectives, and artists we will directly consider artwork and public programs that address: social justice

issues, earth justice issues, creative action, and the future of the arts.

UPROOT

definition: (transitive verb) meaning to remove as if by pulling up; to pull up by the roots; to displace from a native habitat; or in more broad terms can reference a shift or movement. We're interested in various interpretations of this definition.

Artists and cultural producers working in all media are invited to apply for inclusion in the group exhibition. We welcome submissions of existing works and proposals for new projects. All media will be considered, including but not limited to 2D, 3D, sound, performance, installations, time-based, research-based, speculative projects, and public programs. All submissions will be reviewed in the order they are received.

The submission deadline is September 13, but artists are encouraged to submit early.
