Opening Act Assistant Teaching Artist Positions

Job Description: Opening Act seeks Assistant Teaching Artists for its after-school theater programs in New York City’s public high schools. Teaching artists will work as a team to bring together a strong ensemble of students, give them a foundation in improvisation and acting technique, and lead them through the creative process of writing and performing an original production which will be performed by the students in a professional theater. All Teaching Artists will be trained throughout the year and Assistant Teaching Artists have the potential to become Lead Teaching Artists after a year of working with Opening Act.
Assistant teaching artists will be hired for the length of the school year (September-June) to work at 1 of our partnering campuses. Programs meet weekly for two hours each. In addition to the weekly workshops with students, teaching artists will have monthly 1 1/2-hour team meetings, two weekend training sessions and two 3-hour meetings with all Opening Act teaching artists, as well as extra rehearsals with the students as they near their performances.

Salary: Starting $36 per teaching hour, $15 per meeting hour
Required:
• Bachelors Degree or equivalent conservatory training
• Availability for all scheduled trainings and meetings
• Theater training and/or experience
Desired:
• Experience working with young people, particularly in urban classroom settings.
• Spanish language proficiency
• Experience teaching various populations, i.e. students with disabilities, English Language Learners, different social-economic backgrounds, etc.
• Experience with and commitment to social justice work.
• Strong knowledge of or experience with the NYC public school system.
