OPEN CALL:
CARNIVAL Residency Programme in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

DEADLINE: 15 September 2013

RESIDENCY DATES: 10th February – 10th March 2014

Largo das Artes is pleased to accept applications from artists willing to take part in our CARNIVAL Residency Programme (10th February – 10th March 2014). This would suit particularly artists who think their work could benefit from being in Brazil during Carnival (28th February - 5th March) and also the days leading up to it.

In this Programme artists will be able to explore and get inspired in the days and nights leading up to Carnival and also witness first hand this traditional party and amazing atmosphere, adornments, sounds and colors from samba schools and street parades. There are also many cultural and social aspects that can be explored in the biggest carnival in the world with two million people per day on the streets.

Largo das Artes Residency Programme's aim is to promote the professional development of visual artists, curators and critics through research and cultural exchange. The Programme provides a time of reflection for visiting artists to develop projects and experiment with new concepts and materials.
The Residency Programme instigates artists to experience the diversity typical of Rio de Janeiro - exceptional fauna and flora in the gardens of the apartments in contrast to the bustling city centre where the studios are located.
The four apartments are situated in a garden surrounded by the Atlantic Forest in Cosme Velho, a traditional neighborhood adjacent to the Corcovado Mountain. They are equipped with essential furniture, linen and towels, refrigerator, small kitchen appliances and kitchenware.
The studios are located in Largo das Artes XIX century building, in the city centre of Rio, where artists have the opportunity to take part in activities such as open studios, talks and workshops.

The central aspects of the Residency Programme are:
- Studio at Largo das Artes;
- Accommodation in a self-contained private flat;
- Opportunity to propose workshops and talks;
- Open Studio event or exhibition at Largo das Artes Gallery;
- Administrative and curatorial support from Largo das Artes.
