New international creative study programs in English at BTK in Berlin

BTK University of Applied Sciences is a private, officially recognised University of Design, located in Berlin. BTK inspires, challenges and trains the creative minds of the future in two Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) courses – Communication Design and Photography – as well as in the Master of Arts (M.A.) course Media Spaces.

Our Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree courses – Communication Design and Photography – are completed in seven semesters. The Bachelor of Arts degrees provide qualifications for a professional career in the future-orientated media economy. The BTK also offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree course in Media Spaces, which is completed in three semesters. The Master of Arts degree course provides a qualification for an artistic or design-based professional career, as a freelance or in a leading role in a company.

The Berlin campus of the BTK is situated in the creative center of the capital, near to Potsdamer Platz and the Sony Centre, on the edge of the vibrant Kreuzberg district and close to many cultural highlights such as the New National Art Gallery.

PHOTOGRAPHY (B.A.)
To study photography means learning how to see in terms of images. Why does one image speak to us so much more than another? What qualities must an image possess to make it good? Which visual strategies will lead to which visual result?

Images inspire the creation of further images and so therefore, throughout the course, many examples of images from the history of art and photography will be discussed and analysed in relation to their contemporary relevance. This approach provides the students with an understanding of the creative, intellectual and technical factors which lead to good visual results. Projects from the different fields of the photography enable the students to become familiar with the medium, as well as their own strengths and weaknesses. This approach allows the students to develop and define their own unique artistic style of photography by the end of the course.

COMMUNICATION DESIGN (B.A.)
The field of Graphic Design has developed rapidly in response to recent technological developments such as digitalization and the resulting economic and social changes. For many years, a Graphic Designer could be reasonably successful using with a relatively narrow range of skills and specialized knowledge. However, both contemporary and future systems of multimedia communication demand a much more comprehensive approach to the teaching of design and development of future areas of expertise within the profession.

The modern Media Designer is now much more closely integrated into the areas of strategy and conception. They have a much greater influence and help ensure that not only considerations of a formal and aesthetic nature are given to projects, but also allow for economic, technical, logistic and psychological parameters.

MEDIA SPACES (M.A.)
The Master of Arts (M.A.) degree course Media Spaces is a project-based program aimed at graduates who have already completed an artistic, design or media-related university degree course. The multidisciplinary approach of the course is therefore particularly suitable for applicants with a variety of creative abilities and backgrounds: communication designers and media designers, as well as architects, information technologists, stage designers, design managers and media theorists.

The concept of 'space' and its expression in a variety of media have been a central theme in art and creativity since at least the Renaissance and also forms a central theme in media theory. Contemporary society offers media artists and media designers working in this field, a vast range of possibilities through which to research and experiment with new, hybrid creative approaches.
