Japanese American National Museum Job Posting Manager of Membership &
Annual Gifts Full-Time/ Exempt

The mission of the Japanese American National Museum, home of the National
Center for the Preservation of Democracy, “is to promote understanding and
appreciation of America’s ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the
Japanese American experience. Based in Los Angeles’ historic Little Tokyo
neighborhood, it has a nation-wide focus and international base of support.
The National Museum is located adjacent to the Metro Gold Line in the
Little Tokyo/Arts district of downtown Los Angeles, a neighborhood that has
experienced an exciting revitalization with diverse new restaurants, shops,
luxury apartments, and nightlife.

An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the
National Museum (www.janm.org) is recognized as one of the nations’ premier
cultural museums. In 2010, the Japanese American National Museum was
awarded America’s highest honor for museum, the National Medal from the
IMLS.

Manager of Membership & Annual Gifts is responsible for the strategic
execution and management of a comprehensive membership and annual giving
program, including the coordination and oversight of supporting initiatives
in the areas of development services and donor relations such as Children’s
Courtyard.

Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college or university
preferred. At least 3 years of successful membership/annual fund management
and annual gift marketing experience in a member-based organization.
Experience successfully managing membership/fundraising campaigns and
previous experience utilizing volunteers preferred. Personal solicitation
experience and ability to achieve revenue goals. Excellent written and oral
communication skills, detail and deadline oriented, strong ability to
multi-task, prioritize and work well under pressure to meet multiple
competing deadlines. Previous experience working in a non-profit or museum
beneficial. It is important for the incumbent to feel a commitment to the
institution, its mission, program and future plans and to be able to
communicate this commitment to current and prospective members /donors.
Patience and diplomacy in interacting/communicating with elderly
constituents.

Knowledge of Japanese surnames with familiarity of local and regional
community organization, partners and funders is desired. Knowledge of
Japanese American history and culture helpful but not required; however,
sensitivity to issues of diversity and ethnicity is essential. Experience
with Raiser’s Edge or similar fundraising software. Internet savvy, and
familiarity with donor databases as well as online foundation or member
