Ashkal Alwan is currently accepting applications to the 3rd edition of Home Workspace Program (HWP), with resident professors Jalal Toufic and Anton Vidokle.

Creating and Dispersing Universes that Work without Working
Thematically divided into two chapters, led by Toufic and Vidokle consecutively, the program will focus on artistic concerns ranging from how to build and/or disperse a universe that doesn't fall apart 'two days' later, to an inquiry into work in art practice and the possibility of its deactivation and (thus) of sovereign art. The program will be comprised of a seminar by Jalal Toufic that draws on cinema, art, literature and science; exhibitions and publishing projects organized by Anton Vidokle in collaboration with students, visiting artists and e-flux journal, as well as independent research and artistic projects by the program's participants.

The program will loosely follow a process of making a film, including postproduction. The application process could function as the preproduction of the program, so we encourage applicants to submit, in lieu of or in addition to the cover letter, a three-minute video discussing their practice and its (strange) attractor(s).

Program Information
The HWP is an annual, interdisciplinary arts program launched by Ashkal Alwan in 2011. The program targets emerging artists and cultural practitioners who wish to develop their formal, historical, and critical skills and practice in a supportive environment in Beirut.

Each edition or class of the HWP runs for 10 months, led by a different Resident Professor(s) / RP(s) each year and admitting 10–15 participants. Part academic, part practice-based, the curriculum consists of lectures, workshops and seminars by the RP(s) and other leading local and international artists, writers, thinkers, filmmakers, curators, etc. Participants work on collective projects, as well as develop their own in coordination with the RP(s), visiting professors, and assigned mentors.

In addition to the curriculum, participants also benefit from a support network of individuals, professionals, venues and resources around Beirut and elsewhere in Lebanon.

Participants are expected to reside in Beirut for 10 months with limited outside engagements, to participate actively in the various activities initiated by the RP(s) and visiting guests, and to develop and produce a project.

The HWP 2013–14 will start in September 2013.
Lebanese, Arab and international applicants are all encouraged to apply.

Curriculum Committee
Grounding the program and defining its educational framework is the Home Workspace Curriculum Committee consisting of members Joana Hadjithomas, Walid Raad, Khalil Rabah, Lina Saneh and Gregory Sholette. Each year, the Committee invites a Resident Professor or Professors to propose a thematic framework and program, and assists them in shaping the year's curriculum. The Committee also participates in selecting participants for each year.

Resident Professor(s) / RP(s)
Each year, the Curriculum Committee of the Home Workspace Program invites a leading artist, writer, thinker, and/or programmer/curator to propose a program of research and study as the year's Resident Professor(s) / RP(s). In collaboration with the Curriculum Committee, the RP(s) shape the year's program, and invite a series of visiting artists / professors to conduct workshops and seminars in addition to their own work with participants. These workshops and seminars typically engage contemporary art and critical practices, and select lectures are opened to the public.

Tuition
The HWP is free to all admitted participants. Participants are also granted a budget of USD 1,000 each with which to produce their project(s). Please note that participants are expected to cover their own travel, accommodation, and living expenses.

N.B.
The HWP is NOT a residency program. Although non degree-granting, HWP closely resembles a studio and theory program at the post-graduate level.
