IN THE NEWS

Foundation Launched to Spur Giving to Los Angeles Public Schools. John Deasey, the incoming superintendent of the LA Unified School District, is creating a new public foundation to boost private support for the financially strapped school system, reports the Associated Press. The Los Angeles Fund for Public Education will give donors a say in how their contributions are used with interest earned used to support a variety of projects of the donors' choosing.

A to Z GRANTWRITING PRESENTER - ARTIST LINDA VALLEJO

Linda Vallejo, Southern California artist, was recently included in the publication “The California/International Arts Foundation’s new encyclopedia L.A. Rising: SoCal Artists Before 1980†written by Lyn Kienholz and supported in part by the Getty Foundation.

She will present a solo exhibition of her newest mixed media work “Make ‘em All Mexican†curated by Karen Mary Davalos at Ave 50 Studio, Highland Park, CA, in May 2011 and ChimMaya Gallery, Monterrey Park, CA, in October 2011. Vallejo will also be included in UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center’s L.A. Xicano “Mapping Another LA: The Chicano Art Movement†curated by Pilar Tompkins Rivas scheduled to open at the Fowler Museum, Fall 2011, and “Doin’ It in Public: Art and Feminism at the Woman’s Building†scheduled to open, October 2011 at the Ben Maltz Gallery, Otis College of Art. Both exhibitions are a part of the Getty Southern California Research initiative Pacific Standard Time: Art in Los Angeles 1945-1980.
