BACKGROUND

Founded in 1996, Inside Out Community Arts is a nationally recognized not-for-profit organization whose mission is to transform the lives of youth in underserved communities through arts and media education. Inside Out provides free after-school, sequential, arts and media workshops to support and inspire inner-city middle and high school youth to develop social, communication and life skills, avoid negative choices, and take ownership of their own lives. Inside Out gives youth access to strengths and opportunities that do not rely on violence, economic status or social class. Inside Out graduates are empowered as engaged citizens who can make a difference in their communities and the world.

The organization's offices are located at its center in Venice, where program instructors are trained and Inside Out hosts two of its four programs. Four dedicated full-time staff, one part-time staff, 30 Artist Leaders, 15 board members and more than 100 volunteers join forces to provide innovative programs that have been recognized as exemplary on a local, state and national level. The organization operates on a budget of $550,000 per annum. Funding for
the organization comes from foundations, government agencies, corporate
sponsors, and private donors.

Many times honored, in 2005 Inside Out was recognized by the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts with the Coming Up Taller Award, the highest recognition in the United States for an organization in the field of arts education.

THE POSITION

The Interim Executive Director functions as the chief executive officer and chief financial officer of the organization. In this capacity she/he is responsible for carrying out the vision and mission of the organization as determined in collaboration with the Board of Directors, including implementation of policies, leading the financial and administrative management of the organization, and working with program staff to carry out the artistic and program objectives. Guidance and direction is provided by the Board.

The Interim Executive Director of Inside Out Community Arts must be a strong, articulate and charismatic leader with excellent outreach and fundraising skills, especially in the areas of corporate, foundation and major donor cultivation. Overall knowledge and experience in nonprofit governance, management, compliance and finances, board support and management, development strategy and implementation, program design and delivery, plant management, and public relations are all key elements of the position. An understanding and passion for the arts as a medium for social change are important.

SCOPE AND Responsibilities

The Interim Executive Director's key responsibilities include the following:

1. Executive/Operational

Responsible for administration of overall operation of the corporation, including: reviewing and evaluating the results of program activities, ensuring that continuing contractual obligations are being fulfilled; allocating resources for greater program effectiveness and efficiency; developing organizational and administrative policies and program objectives.
2. Fundraising

The Interim Executive Director is responsible for overseeing all fundraising planning and implementation strategies, including working with board and staff to identify resource requirements, overseeing development staff in researching funding sources, establishing strategies to approach funders and appropriately following up, submitting proposals and administrating fundraising records and documentation.

3. Board Administration and Support

· Responsible for providing information, advice, and counsel to the Chairman of the Board, Board Committees, and the Board of Directors regarding the creation of policies, programs, and strategic direction for the corporation. Interface between Board and staff.

4. Program, Product and Service Delivery

· Oversee the program model and growth trajectory, including policies, rights, negotiations, licensing, etc. Work with program staff to oversee design, marketing, promotion, evaluation, delivery and quality of programs, products and services.

5. Financial, Tax, Risk and Facilities Management

· Work with key staff to formulate and recommend annual budget for Board approval and prudently manage organization's resources within those budget guidelines according to current laws and regulations.

6. Human Resource Management

· The Interim Executive Director is responsible for taking a leadership role in creating and supporting a well-running administrative infrastructure with a happy, healthy and high functioning work force capable of maintaining and improving Inside Out's already excellent service and reputation.

· S/he is responsible for the overall leadership of staff in the development and implementation of short- and long-range plans and policies and other activities. Work with key staff to effectively manage and maximize the human resources of the organization according to authorized personnel policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and regulations.

· Responsible for direct supervision and support of administrative and program management staff, and indirect supervision of program delivery staff (Artist Leaders and Volunteers).
Responsibilities include creating job descriptions,
interviewing and hiring senior staff, implementing and/or overseeing training; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Provide support for senior staff in hiring, terminating, and managing their subordinates.

7. Outreach and Collaboration

· Responsible for outreach and liaison with colleague organizations and service providers, developing strategic partnerships and co-ventures.

8. Community and Public Relations

· Be a spokesperson and assure the organization and its mission, programs, products and services are consistently presented in strong, positive ways to relevant stakeholders, public and media.

QUALIFICATIONS

· A Bachelor's degree is required; an MBA or advanced degree is desirable.

· Five years of increasingly responsible administrative experience, at least two of which shall have been at an executive level in a management and fundraising capacity.

· Experience in nonprofit fiscal management a plus. Experience with Human Resources.

· Demonstrated leadership/track record in fundraising and capacity building.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the principles and techniques of research grant administration, contract administration and negotiation, program administration, community organization, fiscal and organizational management, principles and practices of marketing and public relations.

The successful candidate will have the highest moral and ethical standards, self accountability and be a confident, creative self-starter and a team leader/player with excellent organizational, speaking, and writing skills. S/he should feel comfortable speaking to large groups, managing teams, chairing committees, and working independently; as well as bring energy, passion and strong work ethic.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Inside Out offers competitive compensation relative to organizations of its size. Compensation for the Interim Executive Director does not include benefits. The position may be under-taken on a part-time or full-time basis, and compensation will reflect accordingly.

SCHEDULE OF EMPLOYMENT

The Interim Executive Director position must begin no later than mid-March 2011 and extends until early-June 2011 or beyond.
