Founded in 1970, Visual Communications (VC) is the nation's oldest media arts center dedicated to the honest and accurate portrayals of Asian Pacific American peoples, communities and heritage through the media arts. Our mission is to promote intercultural understanding through the creation, presentation, preservation and support of media works by and about Asian Pacific Americans. SUMMARY

The Director of Programs and Artist Services will have oversight over two main VC program areas: Education and Artist Services, as well as directly oversee VCs Media and Production Fund for filmmakers. The Director of Programs will work in conjunction with VC's Executive Director, Exhibitions Director and Preservations Manager to develop fully integrated and supported programs along VC's four program areas. The Director of Programs will also be responsible for the development of organizational systems, technology advancement, and public workshops.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for program development in regards to Education and Artist Service Programs and will directly oversee VC's Media and Development Fund. They will serve on the Program team and, along with the Executive Director, lead all educational and artist service programs such as the Armed with a Camera Fellowship, Media Development and Production Funds, Youth and Senior media-education programs, the Conference for Creative Content, and be a key participant in the statewide organizing of Asian Pacific arts organizations and artists. In addition, they will:

· assist the Executive Director and the Program Team to produce an annual program budget and planning process for each fiscal year;

· plan and implement Educational Programs for youth and senior citizens around media education;

· oversee VC's fiscal sponsorship program for filmmakers; expand on VC's artist services program;

· along with the Executive Director, oversee the creation of a new Media Development and Production fund for filmmakers; conduct outreach, oversee selection process; and facilitate during pre- and post- production;

· assist with the Armed with a Camera Fellowship, oversee outreach and selection process, and coordinate workshops;

· work with Executive Director to create and implement the first annual Conference for Creative Content to focus on new media and technology in the advancement of APA content;

· act as Associate Producer during the annual Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival; manage ticketing for VC programs;

· make budgeting and recommendations for technology upgrades and digital initiatives; oversee technology development staff;

· coordinate all outreach and marketing materials for VC Programs;

Artist Services

Media Development and Production Fund is a new three-year initiative that will provide grants totaling over $250k to filmmakers to produce new media work. VC will create a development pipeline program to assist media makers through the development process and act as Executive Producers in selecting projects for funding and distribution.

Conference for Creative Content is the first annual media conference in Southern California devoted to the exploration of new technology and APA media content, and will showcase the best Asian and Asian American media-makers utilizing online platforms and highlight recent successes of APA's in the digital sphere.

Fiscal Sponsorship Program allows select projects to be eligible for grants and tax-deductive donations. VC provides equipment and space rental for filmmakers and supports artists in creating and completing work.

Education

The Armed with a Camera Fellowship Program offers training, mentorship and access to young artists as a part of a new generation of Asian Pacific Americans committed to preserving the legacy and vision of VC. Fellows are awarded a small grant to complete, within a five-month span of time, a five-minute video.

Digitial Histories is a groundbreaking program that teaches older adults how to shoot, produce and edit their own short films. Two sessions are offered each year and selected works are screened at the Annual Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.

Youth Education trainings are offered through our community partners. Currently VC has two on-going youth education trainings through the Korean Resource Center and AADAP.

QUALIFICATIONS

§ Personal commitment to the mission and goals of Visual Communications;

§ Demonstrated media arts track record; deep knowledge of Asian American filmmaking community;

§ Familiarity with the Asian Pacific American community in Los Angeles ;

§ Extensive experience with digital video production and editing (pre-production, production, post-production) a plus;

§ Knowledge of new media technology, social media marketing, and on-line media platforms;

§ Ability to supervise, initiate and lead appropriate staff and intern meetings.

§ Ability to structure own time, set goals and carry out projects independently;

§ Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines; good collaborator, planner, organizer;

§ Excellent oral and written communication skills;

§ Strong interpersonal skills for dealing and working with a wide variety of people;

§ Ability to contribute to a supportive organizational culture (team-work, humor, flexibility, energy).
