Alternate Routes Program Director

Side Street Projects is looking for a Program Director who is
interested in an opportunity to guide and direct educational
programs, work with other community partners to improve provision of
the arts to public school students and the general community, and
help us to continue to grow our non-profit into the model of cutting
edge, eco- smart, arts program that it is quickly becoming

About Us

Artist-run since 1992. Off-the-grid since 2008. Side Street Projects
is the nation's only mobile and sustainable community art center. Our
mission is to give artists of all ages the ability and means to
support their creative endeavors. Headquartered in Pasadena, we teach
artists of all ages how to roll up their sleeves and do things
themselves with education programs that encourage self-reliance and
creative problem solving within a contemporary art context.

Each year, over 2,000 children thrive in our Alternate Routes program—
a mobile art studio aboard renovated transit buses and trailers where
kids learn about art, design, and fabrication using only hand tools,
raw materials, and their imagination. Over 10,000 kids age 5-11 have
been on the bus since 1997, half of which are at-risk youth who
participated at no cost thanks to grants and private donations.

Alternate Routes’ goal is to teach children how to use tools safely,
effectively and (ultimately) independent of adult assistance. Classes
are held in brightly colored mobile classrooms. Each station is
equipped with hand tools, supplies and materials: everything needed
to create a multitude of projects using white pine as the primary
material. There are two artist-teachers per bus, providing a 5:1
student/teacher ratio at all times.

The Alternate Routes Program has recently been integrated into the
3rd grade curriculum in P.U.S.D. We are working to increase our
capacity to serve all 3rd graders in the district by building out new
mobile classrooms and adding 4 new schools a year. We plan to serve
all 3rd graders in 12 schools in the 10/11 school year.
