Call to Artists! Great Leap's Collaboratory 8

Great Leap is proud to present the latest round of COLLABORATORY, our free,
eight week mentorship program for emerging artists who are based in Los
Angeles. There are 12 openings for the Summer 2010 session.

Since 2005, COLLABORATORY has explored various themes and subject matter:
communities of color, immigration & democracy, and caring for the
environment. Our interfaith coalition-building piece Leaps of Faith, which
was developed over two Collaboratory sessions, recently had its world
premiere at the World Parliament of Religions in Melbourne, Australia

Collaboratory VIII ORDER TO GO deals with the most specific theme: the
Environmental Impact of Take-out Food Containers & Utensils

People increasingly are aware of how our small everyday choices impact the
larger environment and the consequences of our actions for generations to
come. Recently Great Leap has taken on the specific topic of disposable
wooden chopsticks via Artistic Director Nobuko Miyamoto¹s new song, B.Y.O.
CHOPSTIX, and the accompanying music video directed by Dan Kwong which is
currently in post-production. The research and discoveries from this project
have inspired us to focus COLLABORATORY VIII on this particular aspect of
the massive environmental challenge we face today.

Workshop sessions led by Collaboratory Program Director Dan Kwong and
Co-facilitator Young-Ae Park and guest artists will explore elements of
performance and community leadership. During the first six weeks we will
engage in exercises in vocal & physical improvisation, dramaturgy, and
directing, and we will examine leadership, communication skills,
community-building philosophy & strategies. We will discuss story research &
development and technical & administrative production. In addition,
Collaboratory artist-participants will conduct independent research on the
theme and explore their own relevant personal stories.

The final two weeks will be an intensive creation period to develop a public
workshop performance, created in a highly collaborative approach. The
presentation may consist of stories/scenarios, spoken word/poetry, dance,
music, visual art, and/or multimedia, depending on the media of
participating artists.
