Public Art Opportunity: Jardin de las Granadas Exhibitions 2010-11

The Jardin de las Granadas, now rounding off its 1st year of use, is a unique collaboration with the City and County of Santa Barbara, the Redevelopment Agency and the Downtown Organization. It began when opportunities for the temporary display of sculpture was envisioned as part of this passive park during the design phase and sculpture pads were included in the Katie O’Reilly Roger’s landscape design in front of the Las Granadas housing project in the heart of the Cultural Arts District.

In the inaugural exhibition in February 2009, sculptor Aris Demetrios’ colorful metal sculptures were installed, and this December Ken Bortolazzo, installed his stainless steel kinetic works. Both exhibitions were organized and underwritten by Sullivan Goss-An American Gallery.

Today, the County Arts Commission invites regional artists to submit their sculptural works for consideration for the Jardin de las Granadas; four sculpture pads will be available in the Jardin. The Jardin de las Granadas Review Committee* may choose 2-3 exhibitions from the upcoming RFP entries for the 2010-11 calendar years and will consider creativity and aesthetics, appropriateness of concept, maintenance and public safety. Each exhibition will be on view for approximately six months and feature 2-4 sculptures.

These exhibitions are a direct result of the City’s vision and commitment to placing public art in the heart of the Cultural Arts District. The first exhibition will begin on April 23 – October 22, 2010 and the second exhibition, October 29, 2010-April 29, 2011.

The deadline for submissions is 4:30pm, March 11, 2010.

Applicants must be a resident of Santa Barbara, Ventura, or San Luis Obispo County. Prior experience in the Public Art process is recommended but not imperative. A group or an organization, as well as individuals may apply.

Checklist for Artist Submissions:

1. In a cover letter: clearly state qualifications, any previous experience, areas of artist skill and expertise. If a group of artists are being proposed include individual statements from each. Address your willingness and ability to deliver your work to and from the site at your own expense; and provide on-going maintenance if needed. County Arts Commission installers will consult with you and install and deinstall your work at the site under your direction.

2. Include a disk containing three elements:

1. 2 - 4 images of recent or current work proposed for the garden, 300 DPI JPEGS with a word file of a corresponding list including all image information: size, medium, title. You may include additional detail shots if they help define craftsmanship or materials used. You may also include a Photoshopped image of your proposal including all sculptures at their sites.

2. Current resume - Include complete mailing address, phone numbers, web site (if available) and email address. Note: Test your disk to insure both MAC/PC compatibility. No disks and packets will be returned.

If a group of artists are being proposed for one exhibition, include one cover letter explaining the concept of the group exhibition, resumes and use only one disk for all collective images and information.

3. Artist submissions due on Wednesday, March 11, by 4:30pm Please mail all submissions. Mailing Address: ATTN: Jardin Proposal, Santa Barbara County Arts Commission, P.O. Box 2369, Santa Barbara, Ca 93120. Artists will be notified by email by March 17, 2010 of their acceptance.

Selected Artist(s) will:

* Interface with Rita Ferri, Public Arts Coordinator and appropriate city committees, and sign a loan agreement.

* All sculptures need to be anchored to the existing sculpture pads at three of the existing five points of attachment. All artists will have a preliminary meeting at the sculpture pads.

* Be available to deliver and install their work in a timely manner; and provide on-going maintenance if needed.

* Be available to deinstall work at the end of the exhibition.

City’s Visual Art in Public Places Committee (VAPP) and the City Arts Advisory Committee will review the recommended proposals of the Jardin de las Granadas Review Committee for final approval.

This exhibition is a direct result of the Santa Barbara community’s vision and commitment to placing public art in the heart of the Cultural Arts District. * The Jardin de las Granadas Committee will include some members of the current State of the Art Gallery SOAG Committee and representatives from the Downtown Organization’s Cultural Committee, SB Museum of Art, University Art Museum and a member of the Granada Garage Staff.
