for Visual Artist/Muralist MacArthur Park

LA Commons is searching for a Lead Artist to work
with a core Youth Arts Team

(Age 15-25) to collect neighborhood
stories at the sites and design and paint portable

Murals that share the
history and current stories of the contribution of Central American

Immigrants to the life,
art and culture of Los Angeles.

Project Partners: LA Commons, CARECEN, Mama’s Hot Tamales, MacArthur
Park Recreation Center, ReDiscover MacArthur Park, Miguel Contreras Learning Center
and the office of LA City Council Member Ed Reyes.

The Role the Lead Artist/Designer in
this project will be:

To participate in story/image gathering
process with the group to inform the designs for the murals.
To mentor the Core Youth Arts team to foster
youth in the development of skills in image making and design.
To create the overall visual identity and
cohesiveness for the portable mural installation in MacArthur Park.

Timeline

Weekly workshops will
take place on Fridays 4:30-6:30 pm at CARECEN.

Late February-March 2010
Story and Image gathering and Design

March- April – Design

April-June – Complete
Painting and Installation

There will also be a
celebration planned for July or September 2010

Artist Qualifications

Experience in Mural Painting and Design
Experience working with youth and community
Familiarity with MacArthur Park and stories
of Central American Immigrants in Los Angeles.

Compensation

$2000 stipend for Lead
Artist
