LONG BEACH PLAYHOUSE

VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION PROGRAM

Call to Artists

The Long Beach Playhouse announces a Call for Artists for a six-week
2-dimensional visual art exhibition featuring works by a single artist in
association with the theme of Real Women Have Curves by Josefina Lopez:

LONG BEACH PLAYHOUSE BACKGROUND

Long Beach Playhouse, established in 1929, is the oldest performing arts
organization in the city of Long Beach and the longest continuously
operating playhouse west of the Mississippi River. Sixteen productions are
presented annually in the Playhouse's two theatres - the elegant 200-seat,
non-professional actor Mainstage and 99-seat Equity-waiver Studio Theatre.
Nearly 35,000 people enjoy its productions annually; remarkably, a new
production opens at the Long Beach Playhouse every three weeks. The
Playhouse presents a Summer Youth Workshop and a New Works Festival. The
theatre has presented art exhibitions onsite for nearly 20 years.

GOALS OF VISUAL ART PROGRAM

The LBP visual art exhibitions are intended to amplify appreciation of all
the arts for our theatre patrons. As a community theatre, LBP offers
performing, and back-stage experience to exemplary performing artists; in
support of all the arts, we also offer opportunities to highly qualified
visual artists to present contemporary art to the public. We are eager to
raise the level of all artistic programming.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Gallery/Solarium offers 58 running feet of exhibition space. Thirty feet
are to be wall-hung with appropriate hardware; the remaining space has
permanent mounting rails with clips to accommodate works weighing up to 50
pounds. All exhibitions will be mounted and removed personally by the
artist in the Gallery/Solarium. These rooms are used by the Playhouse for
public receptions and special events; food and beverages (including red
wine) are sold and served in this space.

ARTISTS' SCOPE OF WORK

Two-dimensional, multi-media works by professional artists will be
considered by a panel for acceptance. The art will be installed and removed
by the artist; works may be for sale and proceeds shared with the Playhouse
on an 85%/15% basis. Artist will provide art labels and a price list to the
LBP. LBP will announce the exhibition on its website. Artist will be
responsible for all other marketing.

ARTIST SELECTION CRITERIA - The visual art exhibit will be presented in
conjunction with Real Women Have Curves by Josefina Lopez.
Play run dates: April 9-May 15, 2010.

This is an open call to all professional artists working or living in the
Los Angeles-Orange County area. Two-dimensional, multi-media works by
professional artists will be considered by a panel for acceptance. The
panel will consider works that demonstrate a cohesive body of work and will
judge works in terms of aesthetic merit and suitability for the space and
association with the theme of the play.

Summary of Real Women Have Curves by Josefina Lopez:

Frantic to save their tiny sewing factory and their jobs, five full-figured
Mexican-American women dash to meet unachievable production deadlines. Set
in East L.A., this hilarious story reveals the hopes of Ana, the youngest
worker, who aspires to escape the barrio through a college education and to
achieve fame as a writer. Eventually, Ana learns to appreciate her work and

journalism fellowship that will help her realize her dreams and take her to
New York City.
