Description

From May 2010 Casino Luxembourg – Forum d'art contemporain will host project room @ aquarium, a new artist-in-residency programme based in the so-called "Aquarium", a 175 sqm steel and glass pavilion. This light-flooded structure, which was added to the southern facade of the building in 1959, integrates seamlessly with the Casino Luxembourg's historic architecture. While linking the venue with its urban environment, it remains partly disconnected from the main exhibition spaces within the building, which explains why it has been lacking a consistent function up to this point. The international residency programme, while aiming to stimulate exchange and debate with the local scene, was therefore devised to take full advantage of the Aquarium's potential by sharpening its visual identity and defining its purpose.

project room @ aquarium will be an integral part of the Casino Luxembourg's agenda of exhibitions and events. Participants are directly confronted with the location and will be asked to propose work that specifically addresses the space and its characteristics. They will furthermore be expected to present their practice to the public and to participate in the activities of Casino Luxembourg on specific occasions, to be defined with the management. Their project will be exhibited over a period of two months at the end of the residency and documented in a publication to coincide with the presentation.

Eligibility

The residency is open to all individuals or artists' collectives, who are looking to develop their practice in a professional context by creating new work or completing a specific project in relation to their research. Applicants are free to choose their means of artistic expression but must give documented proof of at least three years' work and exhibition practice. In order to facilitate communication with the local scene, participants should be fluent in either English, French or German. All applicants must hold a valid visa for the duration of the residency.

Selection procedure

A jury of experts will select the candidate(s) for the two residencies to be held in 2010 based on the quality of work and the applicants' potential to use the residency to maximum benefit. The selected candidate(s) will be informed of the jury results via email at the end of February 2010.

Jury

This year's jurors are Jean-Jacques Dumont, artist and professor, École supérieure d'art Metz Métropole (ESAMM) and École Supérieure des Arts décoratifs de Strasbourg (ÉSADS); Berit Fischer, freelance curator, Berlin; Emmanuel Lambion, freelance curator and art worker / Bn Projects, Brussels; Kevin Muhlen, artistic director, Casino Luxembourg – Forum d'art contemporain; Christine Walentiny, exhibitions manager and project coordinator, Casino Luxembourg – Forum d'art contemporain.

Budget

Casino Luxembourg will provide financial and technical support and will be in charge of implementing the artist's project to a maximum cost of EUR 10,000. Participants will be accommodated in a centrally located, self-sufficient flat at Centre Culturel de Rencontres Abbaye de Neumünster. Casino Luxembourg will cover for the artist's travel costs to and from Luxemburg and will provide a bulk sum of EUR 1,500 toward general expenses, to be paid in three instalments, the first of which will be made upon arrival. At the end of the residency participants will furthermore be paid a fee of EUR 1,500.
