CASTING CALL
“The First Lady”
Opera based on 2 weeks in the life of Eleanor Roosevelt

COMPOSER:
Kenneth Wells

REQUIREMENTS:
Strong musicianship, stage experience, and good team attitude.
Prepare one work in English written after 1930 and one other selection of
your choice. Sight reading a portion
of score may be requested. You may bring an accompanist; we will have
accompanists but submit a copy of
audition piece in advance if possible.

There will be 2-3 performances sponsored by the UCLA Media and Medicine for
Communities center dates
TBD (possibly last two weekends in February). Rehearsals to begin this
Fall.

COMPENSATION:
For principals, fees to be negotiated on casting
Chorus (SATB, 20-25) $100-$200.

Cast of 13 principals and chorus.

Eleanor Roosevelt (mezzo-soprano)
Lucy Rutherfurd (high soprano)
Anna Boettinger (lyric soprano)
Margaret Suckley (soprano)
Laura Delano (soprano)
Elizabeth Shumatoff (contralto)
Malvania Thompson (contralto or mezzo-soprano)
Ross McIntire (baritone or bass-baritone)
Arthur Prettyman (bass, African American)
Nicolas Robbins (tenor)
William Hassett (tenor)
Harry Truman (baritone)
FDR (baritone)

Comprimario roles may be cast from chorus, consolidated, or double-cast with
principal roles:
Priest (baritone)
Stationmaster (baritone)
Frank Jr. (baritone)
Elliott Roosevelt (tenor)
James Roosevelt (tenor)

AUDITION TIME & PLACE:
Auditions on Saturday 11/14/09 between 1pm & 6pm and Wednesday 11/18 between
4:30pm & 8:30pm at
the Schoenberg Hall Orchestra Room (405 Hilgard Ave., Rm 1343, Los Angeles,
CA 90024); may
accommodate requests for other times based on availability. Call backs
11/23 between 4:30pm & 8:30pm.
