Special Project Volunteer/Intern – Inside Out Community Arts

Inside Out Community Arts is a nationally award-winning non-profit
organization that utilizes theater, movement, music, writing, and visual arts
to explore the imagination in a positive manner in order to build self-esteem,
conflict resolution and socialization skills. The Neighborhood Arts Project (NAP) serves middle school
youth from 10 different Westside middle schools. The program includes weekly theatre and arts workshops,
monthly family workshops, theater and nature field trips and culminating
performance events highlighting original work by students.

Inside Out is offering the Neighborhood Arts Project (NAP) after-school
at Mark Twain Middle School in Venice, CA. The program includes 17
after-school workshops; 2 Family Workshops; 1 Theatre Field Trip to see a
professional play; 1 Beach/Nature Field Trip; 1 Painting Day and a free
culminating evening performance of students’ original theater pieces at the
Inside Out Theater for up to 300 peers, family and community members.

SERVICE DESCRIPTION

The Special Project Volunteer will serve as the liaison, assisting
instructors and students for the NAP program in the following:

Support
on-site (Mark Twain Middle School, 2224 Walgrove Ave. LA, 90066) logistics for Inside Out’s NAP program.Pre-workshop set-up, including greeting and signing students
in each afternoon, overseeing snacks, assisting with registration and
field trip forms, and if needed prepping classrooms &
auditorium. Assist the
Artist Leaders and participate in student workshops (when
possible), field trips (when possible), and performances. Be
able to commit to an assignment that begins September 30, 2009 and
concludes February 3, 2010.
Sessions are scheduled on Wednesdays, some Mondays and weekends.The
volunteer shift is from 3:00PM – 3:30 set up, 3:30-5:30 student workshop. We request our Special Project
Volunteer attends 1-2 of our Monday/Tuesday 7-9pm night Artist Leader
Training sessions to understand our curriculum better and learn how to actively
participate in the student workshops.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have the desire to work
with students from diverse backgrounds.
This position is a great opportunity for students interested in pursuing
a career in Education or Arts Education Administration and/or becoming a
Teaching Artist. The volunteer must be professional, responsible and reliable
and have great communication and organizational skills. Interested candidates should enjoy
exploring arts with kids, acting, painting, dancing and singing. A background check and TB test are
required.
