Inside Out Community Arts is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization working to empower youth through the arts. Through visual and performing arts workshops, performances and festivals, our mission is to give youth from all backgrounds the tools, confidence and inspiration to make a positive difference in their communities and the world… from the inside out.

KIDVID is a collaborative program presented by Inside Out Community Arts and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation. KidVid is a video and filmmaking course that connects industry professionals and media artists with inner-city high school students. KidVid is an evolving program, with many basics in place and numerous opportunities for development and growth on the immediate horizon.

The successful KidVid Instructor will be much more than a classroom teacher, though classroom and mentoring skills and experience are essential to the mix. This position also includes student recruitment, program and budget management, in addition to other key administrative duties: curriculum planning, bi-weekly reporting, oversight and tracking of purchases, equipment check out/in, inter-office correspondence, guest presenter coordination, etc. The Kid Vid Instructor is responsible for guiding the students through an effective and enriching video production program, enabling students to produce high quality, 5-minute video projects addressing local/global issues of student interest. Additionally, the Kid Vid Instructor supervises the production and editing of a 5-minute documentary on our middle school theatre program, The School Project, which includes shooting a theatre field trip, camping retreat, final performance and closure party.

There will be a fair amount of autonomy and the KidVid Instructor will supervise 1-2 Instructional Assistants and will instruct up to 16 student participants. The KidVid Instructor, reports to the Artistic Director of Inside Out Community Arts, who will be available to provide support. Regular communications between the AD and the KidVid Instructor is essential. This is a contract position with stipend-based pay at $8k total.

This is a year-long opportunity and commitment, with planning and recruitment between Aug – Nov 09 and instruction, mostly Saturdays, from 10:30am-2:30pm, Nov 2009 – Aug 2010.

CORE DUTIES INCLUDE:
• Prepare KidVid Syllabus and Lesson Plans, Schedule, Calendar, Field Trips – share and post as appropriate
• Prepare and schedule facility accommodations (storage, classroom, equipment use, transportation, production and post production locations, etc.)
• Arrange for authoring/duplication of finished media
• Plan screening(s) and reception(s)
• Interview Assistant applicants and hire assistant (for Fall/Spring 09-10) and/or volunteer/intern
• Recruitment within Inside Out and at L.A. High Schools and peer organizations
• Generate succinct bi-weekly progress reports
• Plan/Produce all shoots and final screening party
• Lead/coordinate editing sessions
• Coordinate with IOCA AD and ED to review and approve final media for public screening(s)
• Oversee/instruct/support students in finishing and authoring final media

SKILLS PREFERRED:
-Strong communication and organizational skills
-Motivated self-starter
-Prompt and professional
-Working knowledge of the Entertainment Industry and production etiquette and workflow
-Strong passion for teaching the fundamentals of filmmaking and empowering youth to exceed beyond the basics to create life changing projects
-Strong knowledge of digital video cameras, lighting & sound production.

1-2 years professional experience in Film or TV Production
2-3 years teaching and/or mentoring youth from diverse backgrounds, TV and/or Media education
2-3 years managing/coordinating youth development, education or enrichment programs
Basic knowledge of Mac, Word, Excel.
Thorough knowledge of Final Draft and Final Cut Pro
Must have transportation and insurance.
