Poznań International Sculpture Triennial refers to a long-standing experience - contemporary sculpture has been presented in Poznań for over thirty years. It is the sixteenth edition of such an exhibition. In the beginning, the exhibitions took place biannually and focused on small sculpture forms. Since 2006 they have become triennials hosted by Culture Centre "Zamek", thus making it possible to display larger sculptures. In the last few years, after the formula, organization principles and venue of the exhibition were altered, this cyclical event has become one of the more significant overviews of contemporary European sculpture.

Apart from an exhibition which comprises preselected works, the International Sculpture Triennial features a joint exhibition, prepared by an outside curator as well as an individual show of a sculptor whose artistic achievements have been acknowledged and who, by his/her works, has become part of the history and development of European sculpture. This year Francesco Marino Di Teana, a sculptor, architect and philosopher, will be honoured with an individual exhibition.

The fact that the International Sculpture Triennial and the selection exhibition will be held in the monumental spaces of Culture Centre "Zamek" (the last European imperial residence, which was converted into the Third Reich leader's residence during the Second World War to the design of Albert Speer's design, and was slightly modernized after the end of the war), in numerous rooms, courtyards and unconventional display spaces (over 5000 square metres altogether), makes it feasible to create a unique presentation of contemporary sculpture – both due to the scope of the exhibition and the possibility of creating a dialogue, confronting the sculpture with the unique form and history of the place.

Poznan 2009 16th International Sculpture Triennial is financed by the City of Poznań.
